June 20, 2025 — As India gears up for a high-stakes five-Test series against England, all eyes are on Shubman Gill — not just as the team’s new captain, but as a batter determined to lead from the front.

Speaking ahead of the series opener at Headingley, Gill made it clear that his focus remains firmly on making an impact with the bat. “Captaincy is important, but at the end of the day, I’m a batter first. I want to be the best batsman in this series,” he said at the pre-match press conference.

At just 25, Gill has stepped into big shoes following the retirement of senior players like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. Taking over as Test captain marks a significant chapter in his career, and he knows the expectations are high — both for his leadership and his batting performance.

Gill will bat at No. 4, a position previously held by Kohli. “It’s a position where you can really anchor the innings, especially in English conditions,” Gill said. “It’s a challenge, but one I’m ready for.”

This tour carries extra weight. India hasn’t won a Test series in England since 2007, and Gill is keenly aware of the opportunity. “Winning a Test series abroad — especially in places like England, Australia, South Africa — is what defines you as a team,” he said. “The IPL is great, but this is something else. You don’t get chances like this often.”

His Test record in England hasn’t been stellar so far, but Gill sees this series as a chance to set things right. He’s spent extra time preparing for the swinging Dukes ball, with help from India’s support staff and veterans who’ve succeeded here in the past.

Backing has come from all corners. Former India coach Gary Kirsten recently praised Gill’s composure, calling him “ready to lead and ready to deliver.” Even opposition voices have acknowledged his talent, though they’ll be doing their best to keep him quiet over the next few weeks.

Alongside him is vice-captain Rishabh Pant, returning to the Test squad after a long injury layoff. The pair share a close bond on and off the field — something Gill believes will be crucial. “We trust each other. That goes a long way in moments of pressure,” he said.

As the World Test Championship cycle kicks off, the India-England series will be a litmus test for Gill’s leadership and form. For now, he’s keeping things simple: “If I can score runs and lead well, that’s all that matters. The rest will take care of itself.”

The first ball at Headingley is set to be bowled under cloudy skies, but for India, it’s a new dawn — with Shubman Gill at the helm.
