Security Forces Release Images of Assailants Linked to the Tragic Attack on 26 Tourists in Pahalgam
In a significant development following the deadly attack on April 22, 2025, in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, Indian security forces have released images of the assailants involved in the massacre that claimed the lives of 26 individuals, primarily tourists. The attack occurred in the Baisaran Valley, a popular tourist destination known as “mini-Switzerland,” when militants opened fire on a group of visitors.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has initiated a comprehensive probe into the incident, with a team dispatched to the site to assist local authorities. Preliminary investigations have led to the identification of three primary suspects: Asif Fauji, Suleman Shah, and Abu Talha. All three are believed to be affiliated with The Resistance Front (TRF), an offshoot of the Pakistan-based militant group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). Intelligence reports suggest that at least two of the assailants are foreign nationals. The assailants reportedly emerged from the dense forests of the Baisaran meadows and indiscriminately opened fire on the tourists, resulting in widespread panic and chaos. Local residents, however, displayed remarkable courage by rescuing and sheltering the victims. Members of the local ponywalla association evacuated around 11 injured tourists using ponies and improvised stretchers. Additionally, a local woolen fabric trader guided four families from Chhattisgarh to safety, and a cab driver from Maharashtra sheltered a group of tourists in his home until help arrived.
In response to the attack, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the violence and assured that those responsible would be brought to justice. He emphasized the nation’s strong resolve to combat terrorism. Defense Minister Rajnath Singh labeled the attack as an “act of cowardice,” while opposition leaders, including Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, expressed their outrage and solidarity with the victims .
The international community has also condemned the attack. U.S. President Donald Trump and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed their condolences and reiterated support for India in its fight against terrorism. The European Union and the United Nations issued statements condemning the violence and calling for accountability .
As investigations continue, security forces have intensified operations in the region to apprehend the remaining assailants and dismantle any terrorist networks operating in the area. The release of the assailants’ images is expected to aid in their identification and capture.
